- Strive for excellence.
- Problem solves.
- Interact safely.
- Respect all
- Impact others
- Think positively.
School/Classroom Rules
5 Whole Brain Teaching School-wide rules are implemented.
- Follow directions quickly.
- Raise your hand for permission to speak.
- Raise your hand for permission to leave your seat.
- Make smart choices.
-
Keep your learning community happy.
Recess/Playground Expectations
Students are allowed free play outside every day during morning break from 10:00 a.m. -10:10 a.m. and afternoon recess from 12:45 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. Students choose individual playground equipment in their designated area or team sports of their choice. Teachers and administrators are on duty to join in the fun and safeguard students. Expectations are for students to:
- Go to the restroom during the recess break before playing.
- Put all trash in the trashcans.
- Play fair.
- Take turns.
- Be courteous to all students.
- Avoid all rough-housing, horse-playing, play-fighting, or hitting of any sort.
**Adjustments may be needed according to health and safety policies. **
Hallway Procedures
Students are to walk on the right side of the hallway and either flipped or always tucked. Tape is placed on each side of the hallway for students to follow. Hallways must remain quiet, so students are expected to remain quiet. Students need to reframe from touching the walls to keep decorations neat. These procedures allow students to always stay safe and especially in case of emergency situations.
Cafeteria Guidelines
Students are to enter the cafeteria in an orderly fashion. Prior to entering the serving lines, students must wash their hands with soap and water. There will be assigned seating in the cafeteria and voice levels should be kept to a minimum. While in line, students should be quit and remain in their designated area.
Students are encouraged to eat breakfast and lunch at school. J. B. Maitland qualified for the CEP grant. All students will eat FREE for breakfast and lunch.
Students who do not plan to eat lunch provided by the cafeteria should bring their lunch to school with them in the morning. Parents may not habitually drop off student lunches in the office. All lunches not prepared in the cafeteria must be in appropriate packaging/containers. No packaging from outside vendors is allowed in the cafeteria. Example vendors include McDonald’s, Burger King, Sonic, and Dominos, etc.
Breakfast
J. B. Maitland received a grant for a free breakfast. As students enter the building, they will go straight to the cafeteria to wash their hands and retrieve a breakfast from the serving line and eat in the cafeteria prior to going into their homeroom class. From 7:30 a.m. - 7:50 a.m., students will eat their breakfast in the cafeteria and proceed to class for the start of News Clip at 7:45 a.m. Instruction begins at the 7:55 bell. There are procedures that faculty and staff will follow to ensure this runs smoothly.
Homework
A homework chart will be sent home weekly with test dates and homework for the week. Please look for this in their folder. Homework assignments are based on skills taught in class, and students should have the knowledge to complete it with little to no assistance at home. Missed homework assignments should be charted on a homework chart, but not affect the student’s overall behavior conduct.
Test Folder
Test papers will be sent home on Wednesday in the Mustang Messenger. The papers need to be signed and returned the next day. Students who do not return papers will no longer have their papers sent home until the first set is returned.
Library
All students will visit the library twice a week. Students in 1st – 5th grade will be allowed to check out books. All students are responsible for the books that are checked out to them. The students will exchange the books weekly. Any damage to these books will follow the Textbook policy.
REFERRALS
Minor Infraction Referrals
In the event of a negative behavior occurrence, the student will be issued a Minor Infraction Referral. The referring teacher will indicate which infraction(s) was committed. The referral will be sent home for a parental signature. These referral sheets are warnings that serve as reminders for students to modify their behavior, make better choices, and act appropriately and respectfully. Along with the minor infraction, the student may serve recess detention or another consequence for the behavior.
If a student earns four (4) Minor Infraction Referrals, he/she will receive a major referral. Offending students will be assigned after-school detention or other action determined by administration. You will be notified by administration and a letter will be sent home to sign. It will be the parents’ responsibility to provide transportation home from the after-school detention. For the second semester, minor infraction count will start over. For example, if the student earned one minor infraction in the first semester, in January starts the second semester, the count will start back at zero.
The referrals also serve to help students accept consequences for their choices. Within a given period, children earning referrals due to negative behavior will be prohibited from participating in certain reward activities (dances and dress-down days). Those special events will be reserved for students who choose to act appropriately.
Major Referrals
Students whose behavior warrants a major referral will be escorted to the office by an administrator or teacher. After investigation, an administrator will contact you about the behavior and consequence given.
Student Adjustment Center (SAC/Detention)
The Student Adjustment Center will be held on Wednesday from 3:05 p.m. – 5:05 p.m. Students are assigned to either 1-hour or 2-hour detentions. Notices will be sent home on the day of the infraction and a reminder note will be sent home the Tuesday before the actual detention. All students must be signed out by an adult. To avoid late arrivals, parents are asked to arrive as early as 4:50 p.m. All students must be picked up by 5:05 p.m. A subsequent consequence, such as additional detention hours or a one-day suspension, will result if a student does not show up for detention without contacting the administrator or detention teacher.
In-School Suspension Program (ISS)
This program is designed to keep students in school, promote acceptable behavior, and paced with their regular classes. Students assigned to the in-school suspension center must attend and comply with all program rules and procedures. Refusal to comply will result in further disciplinary action.
In-school suspension means removing a student from his/her normal classroom setting but maintain him under supervision within the school. Students participating in in-school suspension shall receive credit for work performed during the in-school suspension. However, any student who fails to comply fully with the rules for in-school suspension may be subject to immediate out -of-school suspension.
In-school suspension is on Maitland’s campus when assigned. Students retain the inability to attend extracurricular activities while on suspension.
NOTE: ALL DISCIPLINE MATTERS ARE LEFT TO THE DISCRETION OF THE ADMINISTRATOR
